It is not advisable to lay solar panels directly on to a flat roof because the drop in the panels’ performance reduces the hot water generated from the sun.
If you have a flat roof, mount your solar hot water system panels on a flat roof frame. In Perth, a 25 degree pitch frame is the optimum angle to maximise exposure to sunlight.
It is possible to have a reverse pitch frame to mount your hot water system.
Solar hot water system mounting frames are normally manufactured of anodised aluminum or galvanised steel. The frame has to be strong enough to hold a tank full of water – which is very heavy, particularly if using a 300 litre vitreous enamel tank. (Stainless steel tanks are much lighter than vitreous enamel tanks).
Before buying a frame check that it is suitable for the wind conditions at your property. It is possible to get cyclone rated solar hot water system frames.
Air and Water Residential supply and install mounting frames as an option with their solar hot water systems. We do not recommned installing reverse pitch frames.
