Maintaining Your Photovoltaic System

As there are so few moving parts there is not much involved in maintaining your solar power system other than cleaning and inspecting the system.

Solar Panels

Cleaning

  • Dirty panels reduce the amount of sunlight absorbed, and thus the power generated.
  • It is advisable that you wash your solar panels at least once a year and more often if they are prone to getting dirty. In Perth, this is generally best in the summer months when there hasn’t been any rain for a while and there is a build up of dust.
  • For safety, turn your photovoltaic system off first (refer to manufacturer’s instructions). Clean the inverter and panels with a damp cloth and a normal household detergent.
  • Do not wash the panels when they are very hot as there is a risk of breaking the glass if there a rapid change in glass temperature. It is best to clean the panels at dawn or dusk when the panels are not too hot.

Inspection

Water Damaged Solar Panel

  • Check the panels for evidence of damage – cracking or discolouration. If either of these appear this indicates that your power generation is likely to be reduced. If the panels are damaged and performing below warranty the only option is panel replacement.
  • Check the backing sheet to ensure it is still intact. If it is not it may no longer be safely earthed.
  • Check the junction box and frame appear intact.
  • Check the structure mounting your panels to your roof is intact.
  • If there is any sign of damaged cables or exposed wiring do not wash the panels and contact your photovoltaic system retailer to discuss any potential warranty claim.

Inverter

  • Clean the inverter with a damp cloth and a household detergent.
  • Inspect the inverter to ensure it is still intact. Once cleaning is finished, power the photovoltaic system back up and ensure the LCD displays are working.
  • After a power outtage, check the inverter display to see if is still running. Most inverters turn off after a power outtage.
  • Also, most inverters turn off if the voltage from the grid is too high so regularly check your inverter is still working, so you don’t miss out on power generation.

If you are not happy getting on to your roof and checking these items, Air and Water Residential can service your photovoltaic system, call Air and Water Residential on 08 6363 5343.
