What is a tempering valve and will I need one for my hot water system?

A tempering valve is used on domestic hot water systems to mix the hot and cold water so the water coming into your home is not above 50oC. A tempering valve is installed in new homes. It  is also required on many homes built before 2000 where a solar hot water system is replaced or you change from one type of hot water system to another.

For more information see the National Construction Code or in WA the Water Services Licensing (Plumbers Licensing and Plumbing Standards) Regulations 2000 and Australian Standards AS 3500.
