Maintaining Your Photovoltaic System
As there are so few moving parts there is not much involved in maintaining your solar power system other than cleaning and inspecting the system.
Solar Panels
Cleaning
- Dirty panels reduce the amount of sunlight absorbed, and thus the power generated.
- It is advisable that you wash your solar panels at least once a year and more often if they are prone to getting dirty.
- Clean the panels with a damp cloth and a normal household detergent.
- Do not wash the panels when they are very hot as there is a risk of breaking the glass if there a rapid change in glass temperature. It is best to clean the panels at dawn or dusk when the panels are not too hot.
Inspection
- Check the panels for evidence of damage - cracking or discolouration. If either of these appear this indicates that your power generation is likely to be reduced. Verify whether your output is in line with the manufacturer's warranty. If the power is less than the warranty then call your retailer to determine the process for making a warranty claim. If the panels are damaged and performing below warranty the only option is panel replacement.
- Check the backing sheet to ensure it is still intact. If it is not it may no longer be safely earthed. Call your retailer to make a claim if the panel is covered by warranty, otherwise you can call Air and Water on 08 6363 5343 and we will go through your options.
- Check the junction box and frame appear intact. If they are not call your retailer to make a claim if the panel is covered by warranty, otherwise you can call Air and Water and we will go through your options.
-
Check the structure mounting your panels to your roof is intact. If not call your retailer to make a claim if the mounting system is covered by warranty, otherwise you can call Air and Water and we will go through your options.
Inverter
- Clean the inverter with a damp cloth and a household detergent.
- Inspect the inverter to ensure it is still intact. If it is not call your retailer to make a claim if the inverter is covered by warranty, otherwise you can call Air and Water and we will go through your options.
- After a power outtage, check the inverter display to see if is still running. Inverters may turn off after a power outtage.
If you are not happy getting on to your roof and checking these items, Air and Water can service your photovoltaic system. Call Air and Water Residential on 08 6363 5343.
