Inverters / Non-inverters / Digital Scroll

Reverse cycle air conditioners use either inverter, non-inverter or digital scroll technology.

Inverters provide significant energy savings and no engine cut in/cut out noise. When the unit is turned on they use increased power so the desired temperature is reached faster.  An inverter will then adjust its fan speed to maintain the desired temperature.

Non-inverters (fixed speed) operate at a fixed fan speed of 100% capacity.  They start and stop automatically to maintain the desired temperature.

Digital Scroll operate at a broader range of capacity than inverters. A digital scroll can vary its capacity from 10% to 100% of nominal capacity whereas an inverter will operate between 30% and 100%. At 30% capacity inverters are inefficient. This means where building design or personal preference  require a big variation in cooling or heating demand then a digital scroll is the ideal choice. For example, if you want a separate zone for a children's bedroom but the other zones are for large living areas and several bedrooms then a digital scroll is ideal.
